OTTAWA, July 7, 2011—The historic “Terms of Trade” deal between independent producers and five private English-language broadcasters comes into full force on August 1, 2011. Over the summer, the Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA) will be holding a series of information sessions to advise local producers across Canada on how to interpret and implement the deal.
The agreement is a brand new tool that standardizes business practices and terms between broadcasters and producers. It applies to the entire life cycle of hundreds of independently produced shows commissioned by Astral, Bell Media (CTV), Corus, Rogers and Shaw Media.
“This deal changes everything,” says Norm Bolen, CMPA’s President and CEO. “It forever redefines the relationship between producers and broadcasters. But it isn’t worth the paper it is written on unless all independent producers show solidarity and strictly follow the terms of the agreement in their individual negotiations with broadcasters.”
Senior CMPA staff will make presentations in at least six different regions during July and August – the sessions are offered free of charge to all Canadian independent producers. The key components of the agreement will be presented at each event, followed by Q&A and a networking opportunity.
“The two hours it takes to attend the “Terms of Trade” seminars will be the best spent two hours any producer has ever made time for,” says John Barrack, the CMPA’s Chief Operating Officer and Chief Legal Officer, “Now is the time to ask us the tough questions so that you can leverage the benefits of terms of trade to the maximum degree possible.”
Producers can register their attendance on our event page. To access a copy of the agreement or to contact the CMPA, please go to our Terms of Trade web page.
