November 3, 2010

Big Love and Public Enemies Actress In Person!

The Vancouver Serbian FilmFest will open with the North American premiere of the Serbian/German coproduction, The Woman with a Broken Nose which just won the main award at Zurich International Film Festival.  The film stars Branka Katic, a talented actress better known for her roles in Public Enemies (opposite Johnny Depp), HBO’s Big Love (as Bill Paxton’s candidate for his fourth wife), and memorable appearances onEntourage and other TV series. Ms Katic will be a special guest at the festival opening on November 9.

In its fourth year, The Vancouver Serbian FilmFest brings the best of new Serbian films to a growing and enthusiastic audience.  This year, four features and two documentaries will introduce Vancouver to the latest work from this vibrant country's cinema.

Other festival highlights include: Skinning, a gripping drama about the surge of modern day neo-Nazi and skinhead groups that is eerily in tune with recent events in Serbia; An Oath (Besa), the Serbian contender for an Academy Award (Best Foreign Language Film), directed by the acclaimed SrÄ‘an Karanović, about the love triangle between an Albanian, Serb and a Slovenian woman; and Blue Train, abitter-sweet dramedy about twoteenagers falling in love – against the backdrop of post Tito Yugoslavia.

This year’s documentaries both deal with nostalgia:The Story of Bijelo Dugme Band chronicles the years when the most famous band of former Yugoslavia was selling millions of albums and scandalizing the country with sex, drugs, and rock’n’roll; NY: 6 Hours Behind, explores the lives of native Belgrade citizens who moved to New York during the nineties and have been living “in between” the two cities ever since.

Actors, directors and producers will be festival guests for Q&A's and to discuss their latest work. The Vancouver Serbian FilmFest has been steadily attracting a strong, loyal following from both the Serbian community and the Vancouver cinephile audience.
